SOLITUDE - This 40x16-inch acrylic original on canvas speaks to the hawk in all of us: the independent, visionary spirit whose elevated vantage point encourages self-discovery and inner strength. 

I was inspired to create this painting after taking a much needed break from my toddler. I walked out to the bluff to savor a deep, slow breath of solitude. As I looked north up Cook Inlet, a hawk flew overhead, and I felt immediate lightness spread through my body. Seeing the hawk soar reminded me what it felt like to be free, courageous, and confident.  I recalled Mary Oliver's line from  Of Power and Time, "Creative work needs solitude. It needs concentration, without interruptions. It needs the whole sky to fly in..." The hawk felt like a prelude, whispering, you will have solitude again, you will paint again, you have strength within. 

Solitude calls forth clarity, wisdom, and focus. It reminds us that when the sun shines, to enjoy its warmth on our face, and when the wind blows, to spread our arms and fly high enough to see the bigger picture.

About This Collection

Solitude is part of the Motherhood – Play Collection, a body of work exploring joy, difficulty, and transformation through layered abstraction and intuitive mark-making. Created during a return to painting, the work balances structure and spontaneity, inviting sustained looking and personal interpretation.
