UPLIFT - This 90 x 48 inch triptych mixed media on canvas is a meditation on motherhood, vulnerability, and the strength it takes to accept support.

Since becoming a mother, my inner landscape now shifts between moments of lightness and expansion, and moments of of weight where movement feels slow and submerged. In both places, care continues. Responsibility remains. This work reflects the quiet truth that even those who carry others sometimes need to be lifted themselves.

Built through layers of mixed media, Uplift allows intuition, chance, and accumulation to shape the surface. Embedded beneath the visible imagery lies a hand-typed copy of Mary Oliver's Morning Poem - a subtle reference to the life force that sustains us even in moments of struggle.

Uplift is about interdependence, resilience and the unseen networks of care that allow families to endure.

About This Collection

Uplift is the centerpiece of the Motherhood – Play Collection, a body of work exploring joy, difficulty, and transformation through layered abstraction and intuitive mark-making. Created during a return to painting, the work balances structure and spontaneity, inviting sustained looking and personal interpretation.

Role in the Collection: Release, buoyancy, and the possibility of lightness.

Process Notes

Portions of this work were created outdoors, allowing weather, rain, and three small yet determined birch leaves to leave subtle marks on the surface. Early layers include moments of shared making with my two-year old daughter participating in the movement of paint.

The embedded text was hand-typed on a 1938 Smith Corona Sterling, chosen for its physicality and pace. The act of typing - the rhythm, immersive sounds, and feel of the keys - became part of the making process. The paper was partially burned before being layered into the work, introducing elements of fragility, containment, and care.

Uplift was created using a deliberately limited palette of phthalo blue, burnt sienna, and white - complementary colors layered with transparent glazes to allow light to pass through the surface and bring the water to life. These elements are not meant to be immediately visible, but to exist as quiet contributors to the work's depth and presence.
