PRESENCE - is a lusciously textured 9x15-inch oil on canvas of the backside of Redoubt Volcano based on the artist's backcountry trip across Cook Inlet to Drift River Valley - marking the beginning of her journey into motherhood. The painting is an up-close and personal portrait of the artist's muse, the volcano's breath illuminated in alpenglow light.

Artist Reflection
My husband was ready to have kids before I was. I told him, "I need to touch Mt. Redoubt FIRST." He thought I was joking. We flew over shortly thereafter with a quiver of skis and art supplies. It was a dream come true to touch my muse, feel Her presence and power up close, and have Her become three dimensional. This painting is based on a picture my husband took in the evening light, Redoubt's presence animated by Her breath.
Volcanos are the mothers of mountains, their badass mom energy terrifyingly, intensely palpable. I've wanted to make this painting for over three years. When I was able to return to painting, the image came out of me alla prima (at first atempt). Perhaps tapping into mother volcano energy, it seemed my palette knife couldn't move quickly enough to spread the sumptuous oil paint across the canvas.
The trip was inspiring. Our daughter was born nine months later.
